“A small spark can start a large fire.” ~ Emmet Fox
This simple truth is our inspiration in class this week, and it's also a powerful reminder of the quiet strength that lives within each of us. In yoga, we call this spark Agni—the Sanskrit word for fire, and more specifically, our inner fire. Agni is much more than just heat in the belly. It represents our vitality, digestion (physical and emotional), clarity of mind, and capacity for transformation.

What is Agni?
In Ayurveda and yogic philosophy, Agni is the fire of digestion, discernment, and direction. It governs how well we digest not just food, but also experiences, emotions, and even information. Agni helps us transform what we take in—nourishment, inspiration, challenges—into energy, insight, and growth.
Recognizing Low Agni: The Dangers of a Dimming Flame
When your Agni is low, it's like a damp, smoky fire struggling to burn. You might recognize these signs, both physical and mental:
Physical Signs of Low Agni:
Digestive Issues: Bloating, gas, indigestion, constipation, or loose stools.
Low Energy: Feeling sluggish or heavy, even after rest.
Weight Gain: Difficulty losing weight, or unexplained weight fluctuations.
Poor Circulation: Cold hands and feet.
Weak Immunity: Frequent colds or infections.
Aches and Pains: Stiffness, joint discomfort, or general malaise.
Lack of Appetite: Or a craving for heavy, comfort foods.
Mental/Emotional Signs of Low Agni:
Mental Fog: Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, or feeling dull.
Lack of Motivation: Feeling uninspired, apathetic, or stuck.
Emotional Heaviness: Difficulty processing emotions, leading to anxiety, sadness, or irritability.
Indecisiveness: Struggling to make decisions or move forward.
Negative Self-Talk: Getting caught in cycles of self-doubt or criticism.
Building Sustainable Agni: The Campfire Metaphor
Think of Agni like a campfire. You can’t just throw a log onto a spark and expect warmth. You need the right conditions:
Dry kindling: Inspiration, breath, gentle movement
Oxygen: Spaciousness, posture, and intention
Consistent tending: Healthy routines, nourishing food, rest
Simple Steps to Building Agni
Ready to fan your flame? You don’t need to overhaul your life. In fact, Agni is best built slowly and steadily. Here are some simple, gentle steps you can incorporate into your daily life:
Mindful Eating:
Eat when truly hungry: Don't eat out of boredom or habit.
Eat warm, cooked foods: These are easier for your body to process.
Incorporate Warming Spices: Add ginger, black pepper, cumin, coriander, and turmeric to your cooking. These spices are natural Agni-stokers.
Skip the ice water especially with meals. Instead, throughout the day, especially between meals, sip lukewarm or hot water. This helps to gently cleanse the digestive tract and stimulate Agni. You can even add a slice of ginger or lemon for an extra boost.
Take 3 deep, conscious breaths before meals – This invites presence and primes Agni.
Chew thoroughly: Digestion begins in the mouth!
Eat in a calm environment: Avoid distractions like screens.
Don't overeat: Stop when you are about 75% full.
Move daily, even gently on or off the mat
lengthening the spine, which gives our inner fire space to rise
deepen your inhale gently to fan the flames of agni.
Mindfully bring awareness and strength to the core muscles, giving structure and steadiness to the fire without forcing it. This is not for aesthetics but balance your posture and to house and contain your energy.
Give yourself space to digest life – Pause. Journal. Rest. Don’t rush from one thing to the next. Adequate sleep allows your body and mind to repair and rejuvenate, keeping Agni balanced.
Manage Stress: Chronic stress can dampen Agni. Incorporate stress-reducing practices like meditation, spending time in nature, or simply taking a few deep breaths when you feel overwhelmed.
Be inspired – Surround yourself with small sparks: beauty, nature, uplifting conversations.
Agni is not about force or intensity. It’s about creating the conditions for your natural brilliance to burn steady and bright. The spark is already within you. There is a saying in Ayurveda that "Right makes Right". One intentional choice—like taking a conscious breath, choosing a warm meal, or stepping outside—can set in motion a greater fire of healing, clarity, and vitality.
So tend to your flame. Even a small spark can light the way.
With warmth,
Melissa
